Alexander Skarsgård, born August 25, 1976, in Stockholm Sweden, Age 33. He plays the role of Eric Northman, the Sheriff of Area 5, a vampire district in Louisiana. A Viking warrior in life, he is a very old and powerful member of the vampire community. He runs the vampire bar Fangtasia in Shreveport, and develops an interest in Sookie after discovering her unique ability during the first season. During the second season, Eric's interest becomes a romantic attraction. This is demonstrated when he tricks Sookie into sucking silver bullets out of his body in order for her to drink his blood. It is then revealed that having his blood in her would cause Sookie to become attracted to Eric, in addition to allowing him to monitor her emotions and location:
Stephen Moyer, born 11 October 11, 1969, in England, Age 39. He plays Bill Compton, a vampire with whom Sookie falls in love, and is a main protagonist in the series. Turned during the Civil War against his will, Bill shows a remarkable and unusual compassion for human life. He is also outwardly expressive of his emotions and holds on to memories of his past human life; behaviors that are unique amongst his vampire peers. Many times, Bill risks his life and standing in vampire society to protect Sookie from the dangers their relationship has brought on. Towards the end of the first season, he kills a vampire in order to save Sookie's life, and is forced by the Vampire authorities to "turn" a teenage girl in order to replenish their ranks:
Ryan Kwanten, born November 28, 1976 in Australia, Age 32, plays the role of Jason Stackhouse, Sookie's slow-witted brother and a road crew supervisor, known for bedding the women of Bon Temps. During the first season, he is the prime suspect in the murders of four women who all have a connection to him: Maudette Pickens, Dawn Green, his grandmother, and Amy Burley. After Amy is killed, he comes to believe that he is responsible for the murders and turns himself in; while in jail, he is recruited by the Fellowship of the Sun, an anti-vampire church. During the second season, Jason becomes more involved with the Fellowship, attending a leadership conference with the Rev. Steve Newlin and his wife Sarah, the church leaders. Although he and Sookie spend little time together, Jason will do almost anything in his power to defend and protect her:
Sam Trammell, born May 15, 1971 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Age 38, plays the role of Sam Merlotte, the owner of Merlotte's, where Sookie works. He has an unrequited crush on Sookie, though he engages in a brief relationship with Tara during the first season. He is a shapeshifter, often watching over Sookie in the form of a dog. During a flashback in the second season, it's revealed that he was abandoned by his adoptive family as a child after they witness him turn into a beagle. Before the events of the series, he steals some of Maryann's belongings and $100,000 in cash after having a brief affair with her. Sam later uses the money to finance a business venture that becomes Merlotte's bar. During season two, he becomes romantically involved with Daphne, a new waitress at Merlotte's who is also a shapeshifter:
Mehcad Brooks, born October 25, 1980 in Texas, Age 28, plays the role of "Eggs" Benedict Talley. Tara meets "Eggs" Benedict Talley, with whom she gradually begins a relationship during the second season. Before Sookie leaves for Dallas, she invites Tara to move into her house; Eggs and Maryann also move into the house shortly thereafter:
Allan Hyde, born December 20, 1989 in Denmark, Age 19, plays the role of Godric, a 2,000-year-old vampire who looks no older than a teenager. It is revealed that he is the oldest vampire in the New World. He has tattoos from Roman times. When he goes missing, Eric sends Sookie and Bill to the Dallas area to look for him. Godric takes the blame for the "PR disaster" stemming from his decision to let himself be captured by the Light of Day Institute to be a sacrifice. He relinquishes his title as sheriff of Area 9 and commits suicide by meeting the sunrise on the roof of the Dallas hotel, while a tearful Sookie looks on:
